LED Skin Treatment – Worth it?
There is a new rave in aesthetic skin treatments and its making its rounds to the various venues. Medical Spas, Luxury Resorts, and even the more distinguished Dermatology clinics and Plastic Surgery Centers. Much has been said, but the question still lingers – Are LED skin treatments worth it?
The treatment is often used as a step in professional facials positioned between exfoliation and hydration. Professionals rarely use technology that doesn’t work and clinical testing has verified that LED light therapy is a proven anti-aging treatment.
What is LED
Light Emitting Diode (LED) is a chip encase in a glass-like resin to emit therapeutic wavelengths (colors) of light energy. It is not a laser and was first tested by NASA for wound healing in space. Later it was implemented for diminishing post-surgical scars. What was realized is that it was a great non-invasive treatment for skin rejuvenation as well.
Harnessing this light energy in the correct wavelength will convert light energy into ATP (adenosine triphosphate) which is a fuel of sorts which the skin cells use to do their job. These fibroblast cells have the responsibility to produce collagen and elastin. Collagen adds support and structure to your skin, or plumps it up, while elastin makes your skin pliable, or more elastic.
How Does LED Improve Skin Health?
Collagen and Elastin production diminish as we age. This is the cause for wrinkles, lines, and folds. You know – those things that make us look old. To rejuvenate the skin and cause these eyesores to go away, LED stimulates collagen and elastin production to revive your skin’s appearance.
So, simply said; LED is great for stimulating the components to help your skin stay young looking. It reduces the presence of fine lines and wrinkles while improving uneven skin tones, brightens skin appearance, and reduces the size of pores.
What About Recovery?
With these benefits, it’s easy to see why so many people are talking about LED. But that’s not the whole story. Many cosmetic treatments can provide these results. Chemical peels, laser treatments, and the more invasive facelift surgery have similar effects.
But what draws people to LED light therapy is not only the results, but because of its incredibly safe and requires no down time.
What About Cost?
Treatment is easily administered and the results are subtle. However, not as fast as some of other procedures, multiple treatments over several weeks are necessary for optimal results.
Salons and spas recommend two to three treatments weekly for up to six weeks. Each session taking only twenty minutes with no down time seems like a great skin care regimen. With no discomfort and little side effects, the treatments are popular. Costs range from $60 – $100 per session which falls in line with the total cost of most skin rejuvenation treatments.
LED Light Therapy at Home
LED is the only aesthetic technology which has no contra-indications. It can be used on any skin type, color, or condition. It cannot be overused and is safe for the eyes. It is so safe and easy, it is one of the few cosmetic technologies that can be managed at home.
If expense or time is an issue, and you can’t make a regular appointment at the spa or doctor’s office, in-home devices are available for LED treatment. They are convenient and effective, and are more likely to be used consistently.
